For this term’s individual project, I contemplated the concept I wanted to create. I aimed to identify a keyword from my daily life, and that’s when static shock caught my attention. I consistently experience a shock whenever I touch any object in my room, particularly digital devices. In some cases, the monitor of my laptop even turns on and off when I experience static shock. This led me to decide to create a video set in my room with various electronic objects.

The initial idea that came to mind was Pokemon. Recalling my memories of playing Pokemon, I remembered an electric-type Pokemon called Rotom, a plasma-type that can freely move between the digital device and the real world. I thought it would be interesting if a character could come out of the screen.

Moving on, I considered the character itself. To depict my room with flowing electricity, the character would be surrounded by an electric aura. Drawing inspiration from the concept of an “online butler” – someone who cannot afford to raise a pet but seeks or watches other people’s pets online – I thought about having the pet come out from the screen. It could roam around my room, knock over my stuff, or simply sit somewhere. Applying an electric effect to it might require a robotic shape. I found some robots with the desired shape and included them in my moodboard.
